The state Bharatiya Janta Party asked the Central government to release Sikh detainees who have been languishing in various jails even after completing their life imprisonment.
Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had asked Home Minister Rajnath Singh to release ‘more than 100 Sikh political prisoners who have completed their sentence and are lodged in various jails on compassionate grounds
State BJP spokesperson R P Maini said that he had written to state BJP president Kamal Sharma in this regard. He had asked him to put up the matter in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajanath Singh. He stated that soon the state BJP under the leadership of state president Kamal Sharma would meet the Prime Minister.
Maini added that the BJP openly supports Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa who has been sitting on hunger strike from the last 25 days at Gurdwara Laknaur in Haryana. He said that BJP president Kamal Sharma along with other BJP senior leaders had met Home Minister Rajnath Singh and took up the issue for early and permanent release of the Sikh detainees.
Maini said that he also wrote to the government for allowing Sikhs, who were blacklisted during the dark days of terrorism, to return home. It is pertinent to mention here that Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa had observed 44-day hunger strike at Gurdwara Amb Sahib last year. He ended his fast on temporary release of Sikh detainees on parole.
